Luna Foundation Aruba, Love That Lasts Longer Than Your Vacation Tan

Aruba is the kind of place that gets under your skin in the best way. The turquoise water, the trade winds, the warm hellos from strangers, the sunsets that make you swear you’re moving here one day. It’s easy to fall in love with this island.
But there’s another Aruba too, one that most visitors never see.
It’s the Aruba of chained dogs in the midday sun, empty water bowls, untreated injuries, and animals who have learned not to trust a human hand because too often, that hand has hurt them. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s real.
That’s why Luna Foundation exists.
Who we are, and why we’re here
Luna Foundation Aruba is a rescue and sanctuary created to protect Aruba’s most vulnerable animals, the forgotten ones, the dumped ones, the injured ones, the seniors who get overlooked, the survivors of neglect and cruelty.
We are not here to point fingers. We are here to roll up our sleeves.
We stand for compassion with action, for doing the hard work when it would be easier to look away. We stand for second chances, for recovery, for dignity. We stand for the belief that “it’s just a dog” is never an excuse, and that how we treat animals says everything about who we are as a community.
For Aruba, this matters deeply, because animal welfare is not just an animal issue. It’s a public health issue. It’s a tourism issue. It’s a culture issue. It’s a “what kind of island do we want to be?” issue.
What we do at Luna
At our Safe Haven, dogs get what many of them have never had before:
reliable food and clean water
medical care and rehabilitation
safety, routine, and calm
space to breathe, rest, and heal
socialisation, training, and trust-building
love, patience, and time
Some of our dogs find homes, locally or abroad. Some are older and will never be the “easy” adoption story. They are still worthy. For those dogs, Luna is not a temporary stop. It’s home, the first safe home they’ve ever known.
And yes, that can be heavy to witness. If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of a dog who flinches at sudden movement, or who still expects a kick instead of a cuddle, you know the kind of heartbreak that sits in your chest and doesn’t leave quickly.
But here’s the truth: heartbreak is not the enemy. Indifference is.
Our biggest goal, a future where we’re not needed
Luna Foundation exists because there is a gap, in education, in resources, in enforcement, in support for animal welfare on the island. We’re filling that gap with the power we do have: community, consistency, and care.
But our long-term dream is bigger than rescue.
We want to change the mindset, especially in future generations. We want children to grow up learning empathy, responsibility, and respect for animals as part of everyday life, not as a “nice extra.” We want young people to understand that spaying and neutering prevents suffering, that proper care is not optional, and that cruelty should never be normalised.
Because one day, the ultimate success story would be this:Aruba no longer needs Luna Foundation.
That’s the North Star. Rescue now, educate for later, change the future.
What we need, and why your support matters
Rescue work is emotional, but it’s also practical. It costs money, every single day.
Food. Medicine. Vet bills. Emergency care. Building and maintaining safe spaces. Staff. Transport. Sterilisation programs. Outreach. Education. It adds up quickly, and the need never takes a day off.
We also need broader support across the board:
More awareness, so the hidden suffering is no longer invisible
More government support and stronger enforcement, so cruelty has consequences
More local funding and corporate backing, because this is an island issue, not a side project
More community involvement, because lasting change is always a team effort
This is not about blaming locals or “telling Aruba what to do.” Aruba is full of kind people, people who already care, people who rescue quietly and help where they can. This is about raising the standard together, creating pride in being an island that protects its animals, not ignores them.
Encouragement works better than shame. Collaboration works better than criticism. Change happens faster when everyone feels included in it.
Tourists, yes, you can help too
If Aruba holds a place in your heart, you can be part of making it better.
Tourists are not outsiders to this story, you’re part of the island’s ecosystem. The tourism industry thrives here, and that gives visitors a powerful opportunity to support the place they love in a meaningful way.
Here are a few ways you can make a difference:
donate to help cover medical care, food, and sanctuary needs
sponsor a dog’s care if you want ongoing impact
share Luna Foundation with fellow travellers who love Aruba
support ethical local businesses that help the community
consider giving your time while you’re here, even if it’s just a morning
Which brings us to something new we’re quietly building behind the scenes.
Coming soon, Voluntourism with Luna Foundation
We’re working on a Voluntourism program for visitors who want to do something real while they’re on holiday, something that feels good long after you’re back home.
Picture this: a peaceful morning at our Safe Haven, surrounded by Aruba’s beautiful cunucu. You’ll meet our dogs, hear their stories, take a guided tour of the property, and spend time doing what these animals need most, gentle connection.
You may even get to meet Zoey, one of our unforgettable faces of Luna.
You’ll be able to play with puppies, give belly rubs to the older dogs who live for quiet affection, and take a dog for a walk through the calm countryside.
It’s not a “saviour” experience. It’s not performative. It’s simply humans showing up for animals, respectfully, lovingly, and with purpose.
We’ll share more soon.
The bottom line
Luna Foundation is important because it stands in the gap between cruelty and recovery. Because it refuses to accept suffering as “just the way it is.” Because it believes Aruba can be known not only for its beaches, but also for its compassion.
If you’ve ever loved this island, if Aruba has ever felt like a second home, then supporting its animals is one of the most powerful ways you can give back.
It takes a village to change a culture, and we’re building that village, one rescued life at a time.
If you’d like to support Luna Foundation, donate, sponsor, or learn about upcoming programs, keep an eye on our updates and follow along. The dogs are counting on us, and the future of Aruba’s animal welfare depends on what we do now.
